Owner: Mary Heffernan

Academic Trainers has provided private tutoring for homework help, enrichment and test preparation in downtown Menlo Park since 2000.  Mary Heffernan (formerly Mary Simonson), a Menlo Park native, started Academic Trainers with the vision of an all-inclusive center that would provide guidance and resources to help students excel in their studies.  She now runs the H&H Company with her husband Brian and their four daughters Francie, Maisie, Janie and Tess.

Kendra holds a BA in English from Luther College as well as an ESL Teaching Certificate from Seattle University. She has several years’ tutoring experience and loves helping students learn. In her spare time, Kendra loves practicing yoga, biking, traveling, and reading. She is a dedicated to making Academic Trainers the best tutoring center for your students’ needs!

 

Assistant Director: Z Ahmad

Z earned her BS in Biological Sciences and minored in Chemistry at CSU. She is on a pre-med track, but she's also super popular with younger students! Z likes to make every topic fun, using every trick up her sleeve to make the content make sense. If you like camping, skiing, outdoor activities, traveling, or playing video games, then the two of you will have a lot to talk about.

Bryce attended Santa Clara University and graduated with an English Literature major and a History minor. He has always had an equal love of reading and writing fiction, which he fulfilled with his emphasis in Creative Writing. He has also studied Spanish and French and traveled to France and England twice. Bryce likes to make the humanities as easy and interesting as he can for students of all ages!

Caitlin earned her BA in Linguistics and Scandinavian Area Studies at University of Washington in Seattle. She earned her Masters in Linguistics at UC Davis and is currently working on her PhD. Caitlin loves anything to do with language, especially foreign language and grammar! Caitlin loves (almost) every movie ever made, and she loves to read.

Deepak earned his BS in Nutritional Science, Human Physiology, and Metabolism at UC Berkeley. He is a fun guy who loves making science accessible to his students. Deepak is also a seasoned photographer and videographer, and he loves to do projects that use both his fields of interest.

Gaby earned her BS in Human Biology with a concentration in Neurobiology and Psychology from Stanford University. She is passionate about science, math, and learning. She hopes to someday become a physician. In her spare time, she enjoys singing, running, playing video games, trying new foods, and spending time with friends. Gaby likes to make learning a fun process for her students and is excellent at providing them with helpful strategies and tips to understand academic and test prep content.

Ingrid is a life-long Bay Area resident and life-long learner. She earned her BA in Anthropology from UC Santa Cruz with supporting coursework in human anatomy, physiology, and psychology. She has regularly taken continuing education courses from local colleges in the years since, including a current brush up in Chemistry in preparation for completion of a Pre-Medical certificate. She has also provided volunteer assistance to learners of English as a second language and served as a college-readiness mentor for students at a local charter school.

Jaybal is a very patient and organized upper level math tutor who earned his MBA from CSUS in Sacramento and his BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Mumbai. In his spare time, Jaybal enjoys running, practicing yoga, and reading books.

Joanna earned her M.S. in Statistics from San Jose State University. She has several years of experience helping students learn about her favorite subject - math! She loves sharing ideas with students and learning from them as well. Her favorite hobbies are traveling and sketching.

Joseph earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University in 2011, and since then has been coaching students in math, science and academic test prep. He was born in Milwaukee, spent a year of his young life in Nigeria, was raised in Little Rock, and enjoys a variety of activities including reading, snowboarding/longboarding, music production, software development and team sports.

Katie earned a BA in Communication and Theatre Arts from Marquette University and a Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Katie is passionate about language/foreign languages and has a background in Latin, Portuguese and Spanish. She also has a passion for writing and literature. Katie enjoys spending time outdoors and exploring the Bay Area with friends and family. Katie is also a folk musician, and she plays harp and piano.

Maria attended Notre Dame de Namur University where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry. She plans to go to medical school once she has completed her pre-med certification. Maria loves reading, painting, dancing, and inventing new recipes! Maria is a seasoned traveler and has been to exciting places like France, China, and Japan.

Michael holds a BA in Psychology, an MA in Counseling Psychology, and a BS in Cellular/Molecular Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Humboldt State University. He loves all things related to science, and enjoys finding ways of integrating different fields of knowledge. In his free time he paints, reads, and flies drones.

Rex attended UC Davis where he earned a BS in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior. As a tutor, Rex encourages his students to explain the concept to him before working through example problems, and figuring out a method for solving them. Rex enjoys photography, playing golf, and tinkering with electronics and computers. He aspires to be a medical doctor and obtain a MA or PhD in Neuroscience or Psychology.

Stephane attended Cal Poly Ponoma for a BS in Applied Mathematics. He teaches mathematics at all levels through Calculus and is great with statistics as well. He enjoys playing sports like soccer, basketball and especially ultimate frisbee, which he played professionally for the Los Angeles Aviators. Todd has over ten years of experience as an Algebra teacher in a private, Lutheran school in San Francisco.  Prior to that, he had his own private math/test prep tutoring business for three years.  Todd has a single subject, California High School math teaching credential.  He has a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Southwestern University, a math minor, and an M.B.A. from Claremont Graduate University.  Last year, Todd was a full-time student in the math department at the University of San Francisco taking classes such as Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Linear Algebra, post Calculus math, and introductory programing.  For fun, Todd is passionate about outdoor sports and traveling with his wife.

Vincent holds a BA in English Literature and a PhD in Spanish Literature. He has taught at the university level for over a decade and has also taught high school English and ESL. In his spare time, he helps parent two awesome kids, reads a lot of books, writes a few, and experiments with time travel by putting instant oatmeal in the microwave. . .
