ABOUT THE EXAMS

Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE): The ISEE is a 3 hour (or less) admission test for entrance into private schools. The ISEE has three levels: a Lower Level for students applying to private middle schools, a Middle Level for students in sixth or seventh grade applying to a private middle school, and an Upper Level for students in eighth grade or beyond applying to private high schools. The content of the test includes synonyms, sentence completion, reading comprehension, and math. There is an essay section that is not scored but sent to the prospective school as a sample of the student's writing.

High School Placement Test (HSPT): The HSPT is a 2.5 hour standardized test that is used by some private and Catholic high schools. The student will be tested in four areas, reading, math, quantitative reasoning, and language. The tests are given as early as October and as late as January.

Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT): The SSAT is a 3 hour admission test for entrance into private schools. The ISEE and SSAT are very similar. This test includes the following content: synonyms, analogies, math, and reading comprehension. There is an essay section that is sent to the applicant's prospective school choices as a sample of their writing.
